Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Díaz has received unexpectedly positive news this Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
This development follows the official confirmation that Senegal has been stripped of its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, which they had initially won back in January of this year.
The AFCON final itself, featuring hosts Morocco and Senegal, was marred by controversy. Senegal’s players notably left the field of play after a late penalty decision was awarded to Morocco. After a significant delay, Senegal eventually returned to complete the match.
During the original fixture, Brahim Díaz, representing Morocco, subsequently missed the penalty kick. Despite this miss, the Lions of Teranga (Senegal) went on to secure a 1-0 victory over Morocco in extra time.
However, as announced on Tuesday, exactly two months after the final, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially overturned the original outcome. Morocco has now been declared the AFCON 2026 champions, making Brahim Díaz an AFCON winner.
Esteemed journalist Fabrizio Romano reported the official decision, quoting a statement: “Morocco have been announced as AFCON winners with final result overturned by CAF. Senegal have been declared to have forfeited the match with Morocco declared 3-0 winners by official statement.” This ruling means that Senegal is deemed to have forfeited the match, resulting in a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
