In a recent conversation with Talksport, businessman John Textor indicated that he is considering the possibility of taking over Sheffield Wednesday.
The American investor is reportedly not deterred by challenges he has recently faced as co-owner of Crystal Palace and aims to continue investing in English football by acquiring the EFL Championship club. Textor`s need to sell his stake in Crystal Palace is apparently due to UEFA regulations regarding multi-club ownership.
The complications arose after Crystal Palace qualified for the UEFA Europa League by winning the FA Cup. However, since Lyon, another club within Textor`s Eagle Football Group portfolio, also qualified for the competition through Ligue 1, the London club could potentially be excluded. This is linked to Textor needing to prove that the clubs are owned independently. While Woody Johnson has reportedly agreed to purchase the shares owned by the former OL president in Crystal Palace, this agreement is still pending approval from the Premier League.
When questioned about a potential acquisition of the club based in South Yorkshire, the CEO of Eagle Football Group commented:
“For me, Sheffield Wednesday represents the example of what`s wrong with English football. They should have the chance to fight for the title every year, but they don`t.”
