Andrés Gomez Poised for Loan Move to Vasco da Gama

Football & Cricket

Andrés Gomez, the promising 22-year-old winger, appears poised for a return to South America after a relatively short tenure of just one year with Rennes in Brittany. According to reports from L’Équipe, the Ligue 1 club is in the advanced stages of finalizing a loan agreement that would see Gomez join Brazilian top-flight side Vasco da Gama in the Brasileiro Serie A.

Vasco da Gama recently experienced the departure of another notable player with Ligue 1 experience, French international Dimitri Payet (38). In the previous season, Vasco managed to secure a 10th-place finish in Brazil`s premier football division, a position that notably qualified them for the prestigious Copa Sudamericana tournament.

Gomez initially arrived at Rennes in August 2024, having transferred from Major League Soccer`s Real Salt Lake. During his brief period with Les Rennais, the talented Colombian forward made only five appearances in Ligue 1 fixtures, during which he managed to register a solitary goal.

Discussions regarding this loan transfer between Rennes and Vasco da Gama are reportedly well underway and progressing smoothly. The proposed deal is anticipated to include a purchase option, giving the Brazilian club the opportunity to make the move permanent for a sum estimated between €5 million and €7.5 million.

Rennes` initial acquisition of Gomez came with a reported transfer fee of €10 million. The Colombian, celebrated for winning the Copa Colombia with his former club Millonarios in 2022, is currently under a long-term contract with the French outfit, set to run until June 2029. Last season proved to be a challenging and turbulent period for Stade Rennais, who navigated through the leadership of three different managers and secured only three victories in their initial twelve matches of the domestic campaign. Despite these difficulties, they concluded the season in a respectable 12th position.

Gomez, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday in September, has already earned six caps for the senior Colombian national team, demonstrating his potential on the international stage. He has found the back of the net on two occasions for his country, with one particularly significant goal being the equalizer in Colombia`s thrilling 3-2 victory over Uruguay last November, during the 2026 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers.
