Arsenal are reportedly trying to get ahead of Tottenham in the pursuit of Christian Norgaard. It`s understood they have made an offer of up to $12.8 million for the Brentford midfielder.
The 31-year-old Norgaard has become a key target for Arsenal, especially with uncertainty surrounding Thomas Partey`s future. Partey`s contract expires soon, and he hasn`t agreed to a new deal at the Emirates, reportedly because Arsenal want him to take a pay cut.
Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad is expected to become Arsenal`s primary defensive midfielder next season, with the deal nearing completion. However, if Partey leaves alongside Jorginho, another midfielder would be needed. Arsenal reportedly scouted Norgaard extensively last season when it seemed Brentford might need to extend his contract by a year.
Although Norgaard later signed a two-year extension, he is thought to be keen on the prospect of playing Champions League and Premier League football for Arsenal in North London. For Arsenal, signing Norgaard would provide experienced Premier League depth behind Zubimendi (whose transfer is reportedly costing Arsenal over his $61.4 million release clause to manage payments). Acquiring Norgaard would be a cost-effective move as the club also seeks to sign a striker and a winger.
Arsenal aren`t the only club in North London interested in the Brentford player. Tottenham are also reportedly looking to improve their midfield this summer, especially with Thomas Frank, Norgaard`s former manager, now at Spurs. With a potential departure for Yves Bissouma, Norgaard could offer valuable experience, complementing younger players like Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray as they adapt to the demands of Champions League football.
