Arsenal`s Ambitious Summer Transfers

Among Premier League clubs, Arsenal stands out, alongside Manchester City and Liverpool, for their proactive approach in the transfer market this summer. The Gunners have already secured three new players ahead of the pre-season. Under Mikel Arteta, the club has finalized deals for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was a Premier League number one at Bournemouth last season and will now serve as a backup to David Raya. Additionally, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard have been brought in to completely reshape the defensive midfield, a role previously held by Jorginho and Thomas Partey.
Our correspondent, James Benge, provided insights into Arsenal`s ongoing transfer strategy:
Benge: `Two more deals are awaiting official announcement: Cristhian Mosquera is set to bolster defensive options for $18.6 million, and Noni Madueke is arriving from Chelsea in a $70 million transfer. Madueke is expected to miss the pre-season tour due to his involvement in the Club World Cup. Perhaps the most anticipated acquisition, Viktor Gyokeres, had a deal agreed in principle with Sporting last week. While a final agreement hasn`t been reached at the time of writing, Arsenal is projected to pay an initial $73.6 million, with remaining negotiations focused on the precise structure and attainability of $11.6 million in add-ons.`
Many are asking why Arsenal is making such a significant number of signings this summer. A major factor is the arrival of new sporting director Andrea Berta, formerly of Atletico Madrid, who joined the North London club before the summer window opened:
Benge: `The driving force behind this squad overhaul is the new sporting director, Andrea Berta. While it`s an oversimplification to attribute a club`s transfer market success or failure solely to one individual, Arsenal`s recruitment achievements over the past five years were built on a formidable combination of data-driven scouting, Edu`s decisive approach to squad trimming, and Arteta`s charismatic leadership. This, coupled with a management team that shared the club`s vision, created an extremely effective system. It only faltered in the summer of 2024 when finances were tighter, and the departure of chief executive Vinai Venkatesham led Edu to explore other opportunities. His successor, Berta, from Atletico Madrid, appears to have made a strong start. Upon his appointment, much was said about the Italian`s insatiable hunger for information, which has certainly proven true. Berta has maintained a close inner circle during his initial window at the Emirates, and while a club of Arsenal`s magnitude cannot entirely keep its business out of the public eye, they have successfully kept the market guessing. Prior to their decisive move for Gyokeres, few external sources had a clear indication of whether Arsenal would target the Swede or Benjamin Sesko.`

πΊπΈ Is Gio Reyna Set for a Serie A Move?
Another American player might be heading to Italy`s Serie A, as Parma is reportedly in advanced discussions to sign Gio Reyna from Borussia Dortmund, according to Sky Italy. The Italian club is owned by American businessman Kyle Krause, who acquired the club in September 2020 and has since overseen its rebuilding. This summer, Parma appointed the youngest manager in Serie A history, Carlos Cuesta, a former assistant to Mikel Arteta, who replaced Cristian Chivu after his move to Inter ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Reports indicate that Parma and Reyna have already agreed on a four-year contract extending until summer 2029, while the two clubs are negotiating the transfer fee and payment terms. Parma has reportedly offered around $7 million for the American international. Reyna is currently seeking a new environment where he can rediscover his best form and truly shine. Serie A could be an ideal league for him, mirroring the success of Christian Pulisic at AC Milan and Weston McKennie`s crucial role at Juventus in recent years.
In other significant transfer news, Inter Miami is in advanced talks to acquire Rodrigo de Paul from Atletico Madrid, with the two clubs having reached an agreement for the midfielder`s transfer, as reported by journalist Gaston Edul. De Paul`s potential arrival would see him reunite with national teammate and close friend Lionel Messi. This signing could also be viewed positively for the contract extension of the football legend, whose current deal runs until December 2025. Bringing in a player close to Messi is a strategic move for Inter Miami, but more importantly, they are acquiring one of Europe`s top midfielders. At 31 years old, De Paul is arguably at the peak of his career. His versatility allows him to play in multiple midfield roles, as he has demonstrated throughout his career, and he is expected to significantly boost the attacking prowess of Javier Mascherano`s team. During the 2024-25 season with Atletico Madrid, he featured in a total of 53 matches, contributing three goals and ten assists, primarily operating as a central midfielder in Diego Simeone`s tactical system.

π° THE PICK: Napoli to win the title (+195) β Considering the current landscape of competitors, Antonio Conte`s side is already emerging as the favorite to claim another league title. Inter has replaced former manager Simone Inzaghi with Cristian Chivu and is undergoing significant changes this summer. Similarly, AC Milan appointed former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri to usher in a new era, a pattern seen at Roma, where former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini was named, prompting Ivan Juric to take over his previous club. Lazio and Fiorentina have also changed managers. Among the top teams, only Bologna with Vincenzo Italiano and Juventus with Igor Tudor have opted to retain their coaches, besides Napoli.
