Despite the official closure of the French transfer window, Ligue 1 clubs retain a unique ability to execute one additional transfer through the `joker` system. This rule permits the acquisition of a player from another domestic team. AJ Auxerre is reportedly poised to utilize this regulation, as per a report from L’Équipe, to bring in 23-year-old Sékou Mara from fellow Ligue 1 club RC Strasbourg Alsace.
Mara`s prospects for significant playing time at Strasbourg this season appear to be constrained. With Emanuel Emegha firmly established as a key player and now wearing the captain`s armband, and Joaquín Panichelli making a promising start to his tenure, competition for attacking roles is intense.
Auxerre had previously expressed interest in the former Southampton forward prior to Monday`s transfer deadline. Mara had also been linked with potential transfers to clubs in Belgium and Switzerland, where their respective transfer windows remained open for a longer period.
Nevertheless, following the departures of Theo Bair and Ado Onaiwu, Auxerre was in urgent need of bolstering its attacking options. They now seem set to achieve this by acquiring Mara on a straightforward loan agreement from Strasbourg, notably without a buy option. Reports indicate that the player is already traveling to finalize the arrangement.
