Barcelona`s significant 4-1 defeat at Sevilla on Sunday has handed Real Madrid a crucial two-point lead in the LaLiga standings, giving them considerable momentum ahead of the upcoming international break. This disappointing result marks coach Hansi Flick`s first league loss this season and his second consecutive overall, following the recent Champions League exit against PSG with a 2-1 scoreline. The team`s inconsistent performance has raised concerns as they prepare for a pivotal “El Clásico” clash against Real Madrid scheduled for October 26th, a match that could prove decisive in the title race.
A notable factor contributing to Barcelona`s struggles was the absence of their rising star, Lamine Yamal. The Spanish forward missed the match after “aggravating an injury to his pubic area,” as announced by the club on Friday, which also means he will sit out the upcoming international fixtures with Spain.
During Sunday`s encounter, the Blaugrana conceded twice in the first half. While Marcus Rashford managed to pull one goal back, their woes continued in the second half when star striker Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty. Sevilla capitalized on Barcelona`s difficulties, scoring two more goals before the final whistle. This victory marked Sevilla`s first league win against Barcelona in a decade, a result that significantly benefited Real Madrid, who had previously secured a 3-1 win against Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, thus reclaiming the top spot in the league.
Flick Reacts to Disappointing Performance
Speaking to the press after the disheartening loss to Sevilla, coach Flick addressed his team`s performance with candor.
“The first half wasn`t good for us. They played one-on-one and were very aggressive. We had no solutions, which isn`t good. But in the second half, I really appreciated the team`s reaction. I don`t want to talk about the two goals; we don`t want excuses. We have to focus on the first half, but the most important thing is the reaction. This defeat is important, and after the break, we will fight for all the titles. That`s what we want — we`re a good team. I`m not angry; everyone saw the situation. I don`t want to argue about it. In the second half, we played well. Now we have to keep going. We don`t like losing 4–1; it`s tough, but in the end, it`s just one game.”
