captain Dasun Shanaka will miss the balance of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup owing to
injury, Sri Lanka has suffered a significant setback.
The hard-hitting all-rounder Shanaka suffered a quad injury during Sri Lanka’s World Cup
match against Pakistan on Tuesday, and scans have now shown that he will miss at least
three weeks of action.
The Event Technical Committee authorised Sri Lanka’s decision to replace Shanaka with
fellow all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne on Saturday.
Karunaratne has already arrived in India with the team as a reserve player, and he may be
selected to participate in Sri Lanka’s upcoming match against Australia on Monday in
Lucknow.
The 27-year-old has featured for Sri Lanka in more over 60 matches across all three formats
but hasn’t done so since a T20I match against New Zealand at the beginning of April.
The vice-captain of Sri Lanka’s team, in-form batsman Kusal Mendis, is anticipated to step
up and assume the captaincy duties in Shanaka’s absence.
