Today marks a significant day for Italian football as Serie A giants Napoli, Inter, Atalanta, and Juventus are set to discover their adversaries in the upcoming 2025-26 UEFA Champions League league phase. The eagerly anticipated draw is scheduled to commence at 18:00 CET (17:00 BST) in Monaco.
Current Serie A champions, Napoli, find themselves placed in Pot 3. They are widely regarded as one of the most challenging opponents in this pot, sharing that distinction with Tottenham.
Meanwhile, Inter is positioned in the prestigious Pot 1, alongside Europe`s elite clubs, including the defending champions PSG, Manchester City, and Real Madrid.
Both Juventus and Atalanta have been allocated to Pot 2 for the draw.
Understanding the Champions League Draw Rules
As outlined by UEFA, the 36 clubs participating in the tournament are categorized into four distinct pots. This seeding is primarily based on their individual club coefficient rankings. A key rule ensures that the reigning Champions League titleholder automatically secures a top seed spot in Pot 1.
The draw procedure begins with the selection of one physical ball from Pot 1. Following this, an automated software system, which has been in use since last year, assigns eight opponents to that team. This process adheres to several crucial principles:
- Each team will be drawn against two opponents from each of the four pots, ensuring a balanced schedule with one home and one away match against teams from each pot.
- A fundamental rule prohibits teams from the same national association from being drawn against each other.
- To maintain competitive balance, a maximum of two opponents can be from the same national association.
