Chivu Expresses Surprise at Pio Esposito’s Development and Concerns Over Cagliari’s Set-Piece Prowess

Football & Cricket

Cristian Chivu openly acknowledged his surprise at Francesco Pio Esposito`s progress, especially after the young player scored his inaugural Serie A goal for Inter. However, Chivu also voiced apprehension regarding Cagliari`s formidable strength from set-pieces.

The Nerazzurri squad demonstrated a strategic blend of rotation while maintaining their focus on overcoming a Cagliari team that had previously secured victories in their last two Serie A fixtures. This approach proved fruitful. Lautaro Martinez, returning to the starting XI following a back injury, scored an early header, soon followed by Francesco Pio Esposito celebrating his maiden Serie A goal.

Numerous other scoring opportunities arose in Sardinia; Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan both struck the crossbar, and David Frattesi`s shot was blocked by a goal-line clearance.

“Cagliari`s tactical alteration caught us somewhat off guard,” Chivu remarked to Sky Sport Italia, “but our fundamental game plan held, and we managed to score early. We created chances to secure the win, but our failure to convert them boosted Cagliari`s confidence. They began introducing more attackers, yet we ultimately stabilized the game, and I`m content with that.”

The coach was seen celebrating enthusiastically on the sidelines following the second goal, particularly because it marked Pio Esposito`s inaugural Serie A strike.

“It`s crucial to remember he`s only 20 years old, with his entire career still ahead,” Chivu emphasized. “He simply needs to continue his current dedication. He possesses significant quality but also considerable room for development, so he must remain grounded. Frankly, his performance has been a pleasant surprise,” Chivu confessed. “He plays for the team, executes tasks effectively, shows no fear, and maintains composure when facing the goal. I`m delighted he scored his first goal; perhaps this will further ease his nerves.”

Cagliari`s most significant scoring threats originated from set-pieces, most notably when Michael Folorunsho`s header struck the post.

“I believe Cagliari fields the tallest squad in Europe, so we anticipated their danger from dead-ball situations and tried to bolster our team`s height,” Chivu explained. “They also excel at timing their runs and jumps, but we managed to keep a clean sheet, which was equally vital.”

Despite implementing some squad rotation, the Nerazzurri maintained their established midfield trio of Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, and Nicolò Barella.

“Their quality and experience are well-known assets to this team, as is their ability to control space and contribute defensively,” Chivu stated. “Players like Zielinski, Diouf, Frattesi, and Sucic are also strong contenders,” he added. “My selection for each match depends on the opposition and also on merit. I appreciate that their collective strength makes my choices challenging.”

Inter now shifts its focus to the Champions League, where they are set to host Slavia Prague at San Siro on Tuesday evening, building on their previous 2-0 away victory against Ajax.
