Cristian Chivu voiced his concerns after Inter`s recent 2-1 defeat to Udinese, emphasizing that the team needs versatility. According to Chivu, Inter must be capable of playing both an aesthetically pleasing style of football and a more pragmatic, “dirty” approach when the situation demands it. He noted that warning signs were evident early in the match.
This loss marked a sharp contrast to their impressive 5-0 victory over Torino in the season`s opening weekend. The Nerazzurri unexpectedly fell to Udinese with a 2-1 scoreline at their home stadium, San Siro.
Inter initially took the lead through Denzel Dumfries. However, a handball offense by Dumfries led to a penalty, which Keinan Davis converted to equalize. Arthur Atta then scored a curling shot before halftime, putting Udinese ahead.
Chivu commented to DAZN Italia, “The game started well, but we lacked fluidity and struggled to build attacks effectively to create scoring opportunities. When we faced our first challenge, we conceded a penalty, and then lost our focus and sharpness. It was clear we were struggling.”
Chivu`s Expectations for Inter

Despite deploying all available strikers – Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, Francesco Pio Esposito, and Ange-Yoan Bonny – simultaneously, Inter rarely managed to test the Udinese goalkeeper.
Chivu elaborated, “The second half showed more determination, grit, and improved movement, though our sharpness faded again as the game progressed, preventing us from converting chances. We couldn`t create more opportunities.”
He revealed his halftime instructions: “I urged the players to increase their movement, make diverse runs to open up spaces, and deliver vertical passes to dislodge Udinese`s defense. However, it became increasingly difficult as time wore on.”
“We introduced four strikers, trying every tactic, including utilizing Pio’s height for crosses. But Udinese`s Solet and Kristensen delivered an excellent defensive performance in the air tonight,” Chivu noted.
Emphasizing the crucial need for tactical versatility, he stated, “You must strive for beautiful football, yet also be prepared to play `dirty` when necessary. Sometimes, a direct ball pumped into the box can be more effective than an intricate pass.”
Chivu concluded with a call for balance and sustained effort: “We weren`t exceptional after the first game, nor are we terrible after this one. We are a team under development. We need to find that balance, maintain focus, and work diligently. This season is long, and there`s a very long way to go.”

The defeat leaves Inter in a challenging position as they head into the international break, knowing they must face Juventus in Serie A and then compete in the Champions League upon their return.
Chivu remains hopeful, stating, “We still have two weeks. Many players will be away on international duty, but I hope this break allows them to return with renewed determination and passion.”
