Despite a challenging ODI history against their opening opponents, South Africa`s recent T20 World Cup triumphs offer a positive outlook.

South African all-rounder Chloe Tryon remains undeterred by her team`s unfavorable ODI record against England, with only two wins in their last eight encounters. She expressed strong confidence ahead of the Women`s World Cup opener in Guwahati, scheduled for Friday.

Tryon emphasized that past results do not accurately reflect the current strength of the Proteas women`s team. She pointed to their recent success in T20 World Cups, including reaching two finals and securing a memorable semi-final victory against England at Newlands in 2023, as indicators of their evolved capabilities.

“Our team has undergone significant changes in recent years,” Tryon stated to the media on Wednesday. “We’ve successfully integrated young talent with our experienced players, and everyone has embraced their roles effectively. Our diligent work behind the scenes has been excellent, so I`m not overly concerned with historical statistics.”

The current World Cup squad sees three absences from the team that faced a 2-1 ODI series loss to England last year. However, there are five new faces compared to the squad that defeated England in the 2022 World Cup group stage, before ultimately falling to them in the semi-finals.

Since that time, South Africa has appointed a new captain, wicket-keeper, pace spearhead, and coach, fundamentally altering their strategic approach. Their progress in the shorter T20 format has provided a renewed perspective. The team also benefits from increased familiarity with their English counterparts, particularly with Tryon, Laura Wolvaardt, and Marizanne Kapp having recently competed in The Women`s Hundred tournament.

While Tryon herself had a modest individual performance in The Hundred, scoring only 31 runs in nine matches, she gained valuable direct insight into the English players. She hopes to leverage this understanding to South Africa`s advantage.

“Being part of The Hundred was a great experience, and playing alongside some of the England players was quite exciting,” she remarked. “Observing their skills and professional approach was highly beneficial, and I aim to share these insights with my team.”

Tryon and Wolvaardt’s Southern Brave teammates included Lauren Bell and Danni Wyatt-Hodge, whom Tryon identified as key “match-winners” within a star-studded England squad.

“As a collective, they are exceptionally strong,” Tryon noted. “They are led by one of the world`s premier all-rounders, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and everyone draws inspiration from her. Each player is a potential match-winner. We must ensure we arrive with a strong presence and give our absolute best. We’ve proven we can beat them before, and we have, so we need to approach this opening game with immense positivity.”

South Africa has notably improved its 50-over performance, bouncing back from a period between June 2024 and May 2025 where they lost eight out of ten ODIs. They have since secured four wins in their last six matches. Although these victories came against the West Indies (not participating in this tournament) and Pakistan (who had to qualify), they signify a successful adaptation to coach Mandla Mashimbyi`s aggressive cricketing philosophy.

Mashimbyi, now nine months into his role, has successfully instilled an attacking style of play within the team. The middle order has been fortified with players like Anneke Bosch, Annerie Dercksen, Sune Luus, Tryon, Nadine de Klerk, and the option of Karabo Meso batting from positions 3 to 8. “Our batting depth is crucial for a 50-over tournament like this,” Tryon stated. “As a batting unit, we’ve made significant strides over the past few months; there`s a clear improvement in our approach and performance.”

Considering the flat pitches expected at this World Cup, high scores are anticipated. However, South Africa’s initial observations from the India-Sri Lanka match suggested that the pitch “takes a little bit of turn,” according to Tryon.

Tryon`s all-round capabilities, alongside her extensive experience, will be vital for South Africa. Both Tryon and Luus are participating in their fourth World Cup, while Kapp is making her fifth appearance. These senior players recognize the potential significance of this tournament and are determined to make a strong impact.

“As a senior group, our goal is to lead by example for the team,” Tryon affirmed. “We have players new to the 50-over World Cup, so it`s our responsibility to shoulder much of the pressure in the middle and cultivate a positive team environment. The team cohesion has been excellent so far. We are genuinely excited for the first match and intend to guide the team by ensuring we remain a tightly-knit unit.”
