CJ Egan-Riley sees Olympique Marseille as the ideal environment for career progression, having joined the Ligue 1 club on a free transfer from newly-promoted Burnley, a move supported by his England U21 teammate, Jonathan Rowe.
During his official presentation on Wednesday, the 22-year-old defender disclosed that he consulted extensively with his England U21 colleague before finalizing his transfer to OM this summer. Egan-Riley stated, “I inquired with Jonathan about the city and the club. He offered nothing but positive feedback,” adding, “He assured me I had made the correct choice by coming here.”
The former Manchester City academy product joins on a free transfer after his contract with Burnley expired. He was instrumental in the Clarets` promotion back to the Premier League, as they secured second place in the Championship last season. Furthermore, like Rowe, he was a member of England`s triumphant squad at the UEFA Under-21 Euros this past summer.
“Marseille represents a significant advancement in my career. I aim to absorb everything, like a sponge, and fully grasp all the coach`s teachings,” explained the ex-Manchester City player. This right-footed center-back, also capable of playing at right-back or as a defensive midfielder, is considered an excellent match for Roberto De Zerbi`s possession-oriented style of play. He confessed, “I enjoy having possession and dictating the tempo of the game.”
His passing ability, refined during a short period with Manchester City`s first team under Pep Guardiola, could be crucial for De Zerbi`s defensive reconstruction, particularly with OM`s return to the UEFA Champions League this season.
