Gerald Coetzee, the South African quick bowler, injured his pectoral muscle during the one-off T20I against Namibia, an incident that now casts doubt on his involvement in the white-ball segment of South Africa`s upcoming tour to Pakistan. Coetzee managed to bowl just 1.3 overs (13 deliveries, including four wides) before he had to leave the field following a powerful delivery.
Cricket South Africa confirmed that Coetzee would not participate further in the match and would undergo a medical assessment upon his return home from Windhoek, where the game was being held.
Coetzee has been plagued by a series of injuries, particularly in recent times. He was previously sidelined from the Champions Trophy due to a groin injury but made his comeback to the national squad in Zimbabwe in July. Since then, he has represented South Africa A against New Zealand A and was named in both the T20I and ODI squads for the Pakistan tour, with the white-ball leg commencing in late October after the two Test matches. He hasn`t played a Test match since November last year, when a groin injury forced him out for the remainder of the Test summer.
This marks the second prominent South African fast bowler to suffer an injury within the past week. Left-arm seamer Kwena Maphaka was withdrawn from both the Namibia match and the Pakistan tour due to a hamstring strain, which he picked up during a domestic first-class match last weekend.
Despite these setbacks, South Africa boasts a robust pace attack. Nandre Burger and Lizaad Williams have both successfully returned to action after recovering from a lower back stress fracture and knee surgery, respectively. Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, and Wiaan Mulder are slated as their seamers for the Test matches in Pakistan, with the first Test commencing on Sunday. Lungi Ngidi, however, will feature in the white-ball matches. Ngidi`s omission from the Test squad is attributed to South Africa`s expectation of spin-friendly conditions as they embark on their World Test Championship title defense.
