Olympique de Marseille`s Canadian defender, Derek Cornelius (27), is widely expected to depart the club before the conclusion of the summer transfer window. The Canadian international, whose contract at the Vélodrome runs until 2028, has reportedly attracted considerable interest from clubs abroad, including Scottish Premiership team Rangers.
The Glasgow-based club was understood to be in advanced discussions regarding Cornelius`s transfer. However, their potential acquisition now faces a significant challenge from Serie A newcomers Cremonese, who have recently initiated contact with Marseille. The Italian side`s proposal includes an initial loan period followed by an option to permanently acquire the defender.
Despite making 21 appearances for Marseille last season, Cornelius reportedly failed to fully impress Roberto De Zerbi during his first year with the team. A series of incoming transfers, such as Facundo Medina and CJ Egan-Riley, alongside the potential signing of Leipzig`s Lutsharel Geertruida, have effectively pushed Cornelius towards the exit. While he has featured off the bench for Les Olympiens, he does not appear to be a key component of the squad for the upcoming season.
