Suryakumar Yadav's Ambitious Goal: Olympic Gold and T20 World Cup 2028 After 2026 Triumph

Following their triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has articulated an ambitious new vision for his team: securing an Olympic gold medal and defending their T20 World Cup title in 2028. This declaration came immediately after their victory celebration in Ahmedabad.

After leading India to glory, Suryakumar Yadav's clear statement provides insight into the team's strategic direction for the upcoming two years, especially after Rohit Sharma's retirement post-2024 T20 World Cup win.

'The next goal is the Olympics. Olympic gold and also the T20 World Cup that year. Don't forget,' Suryakumar stated during a press conference.

The Summer Olympic Games are slated for August 2028 in Los Angeles, with the subsequent T20 World Cup edition scheduled for later that same year across Australia and New Zealand. Yadav also shared his current emotions, admitting that the enormity of their World Cup victory hadn't fully registered.

'It'll take a little bit of time to sink in. We have just come out of a game. It was a good game. Playing at home. When we wake up tomorrow and go back home, I don't know where we are going, but it will be a special feeling. Whatever happened in the last two years post 2024 T20 World Cup has been unbelievable and I don't know how to express it. It has been a wonderful journey,” Suryakumar reflected.

'Obviously it has been a wonderful journey the last one month though it didn't start the way we wanted it to start. But then it's part of the sport. Throughout the journey till today, it has been very special and collectively as a team what we've achieved is in front of you,” he added.

Although India secured eight victories out of nine matches, their campaign wasn't without its challenges. They narrowly defeated the USA in their opening fixture and later suffered a Super 8 loss to South Africa. Yadav highlighted the match against Zimbabwe in Chennai as a turning point, where the team's style of play evolved.

'When we played in Chennai against Zimbabwe, I felt that we have started playing a different brand of cricket. I understood a little bit how to play going forward. And when I played the (virtual) quarterfinal against West Indies at the Eden Gardens, I felt that there was a different level of confidence in this team,” Suryakumar explained.
