Justin Greaves, Sherfane Rutherford, and Jomel Warrican have been awarded international retainer contracts by Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the 2025-26 season, replacing former Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite, Joshua Da Silva, and Kavem Hodge.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled its men`s international retainer contracts for the 2025-26 season, introducing three significant changes. Justin Greaves, Sherfane Rutherford, and Jomel Warrican are new additions to the 15-player roster. Notably, former Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite, Joshua Da Silva, and Kavem Hodge have been omitted from the list.
Similar adjustments were made to the women`s international retainer list, which now comprises 13 players. Seamers Jannillea Glasgow and Shawnisha Hector join the squad, while Shamilia Connell, Cherry Ann Fraser, Chedean Nation, and Rashada Williams are no longer part of the contracted group.
The foundational group of players largely remains unchanged across both teams. Key men`s team members like Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, and Jayden Seales have retained their contracts. For the women`s team, stars such as Hayley Matthews, Stafanie Taylor, Deandra Dottin, and Shemaine Campbelle continue to be centrally contracted. All contracts are set to begin on October 1, 2025.
Miles Bascombe, CWI`s Director of Cricket, explained that contract selections were based on “current performance and long-term potential,” alongside a broader strategy aimed at “building towards major global tournaments.” He emphasized that these decisions align with structured pathways designed for the sustained success of West Indies cricket.
In addition to senior contracts, development (starter) contracts were extended to promising talents Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, Johann Layne, Jahzara Claxton, and Realeanna Grimmond. Furthermore, academy contracts were granted to 15 men`s cricketers and 14 women`s cricketers, fostering future talent within the region.
These contract announcements come as West Indies cricket, particularly the men`s team but also the women`s, strives to redefine its identity amidst recent mixed performances. The women`s team, despite a T20I series win against South Africa in June, failed to qualify for the ongoing ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The men`s team endured a Test series whitewash against Australia in July, highlighted by a dismal 27 all out, followed by an “emergency meeting,” and a 2-1 T20I series loss to Nepal in September. While they secured an ODI series victory against Pakistan at home in August, they lost the corresponding T20I series, underscoring the challenges ahead.
