Cristian Chivu Praises Inter’s Maturity After Dominant 5-0 Victory Over Torino

Football & Cricket

Cristian Chivu lauded Inter`s `maturity` following their emphatic 5-0 triumph over Torino. He subtly deflected questions regarding potential new signings, including Ademola Lookman, stating simply, “There are a few days left.”

This Serie A fixture marked Chivu`s debut on the Nerazzurri bench, succeeding the Simone Inzaghi era in the FIFA Club World Cup. With additional time to integrate his philosophy, the team delivered a stellar performance.

The match at San Siro proved an ideal season opener, as Inter dominated Torino with goals from Marcus Thuram (a brace), Alessandro Bastoni, Lautaro Martinez, and Ange-Yoan Bonny.

Indeed, this decisive victory represents Inter`s strongest season start since their 6-0 thrashing of Atalanta back in 1961.

“We worked diligently, and the players responded magnificently. They are focused on moving forward from the past, and their performance demonstrated true maturity,” Chivu remarked in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

He continued, “Since the very first day of training, the squad has fully committed to our objectives, put in the hard work, and that dedication was evident in their excellent form today. Achieving this level of readiness was not guaranteed, especially after a challenging summer with limited preparation time.

“It’s not solely about physical condition; mentality plays a crucial role. A strong mentality provides that extra edge, and we are actively developing this aspect.”

While Chivu is intimately familiar with San Siro from his playing days, this match marked his inaugural experience coaching Inter in the iconic stadium.

He expressed, “Returning to this stadium as the coach of a club whose history I helped shape as a player is truly special. Nevertheless, my focus remains firmly on the present, given the immense responsibility that comes with this role.”

Inter’s high-pressing strategy proved notably effective against Torino, capitalizing on two significant errors from their opponents attempting to build play from the back. Chivu acknowledged the inherent risks of this approach, particularly considering Inter`s defenders aren`t renowned for exceptional pace.

“Effective pressing demands the correct collective attitude from the entire team. Therefore, we are refining our timing and situational awareness. It`s certainly challenging, but I approach it without apprehension,” he stated.

The starting lineup featured only one new acquisition, midfielder Petar Sucic. Notably, Ange-Yoan Bonny made an instant impact by scoring on his debut just minutes after entering as a substitute.

Andy Diouf and Luis Henrique also came on in the second half, with the outcome already secured. Despite this, Chivu faced persistent questions regarding the need for further squad reinforcements.

He responded, “I’d rather focus on the match itself, but with several days remaining in the transfer window, there will be ample opportunity to discuss such matters.”

When pressed on whether he had attempted to sign Ademola Lookman from Atalanta for a 3-4-2-1 system, and if the failed transfer necessitated a change in his tactical approach, Chivu unequivocally stated, “Lookman is not currently a member of our squad, so I will not comment on players who are not with us.”
