Kevin De Bruyne shared his thoughts on being given the iconic No. 10 jersey during his initial training sessions with Napoli, following his summer transfer from Manchester City. He acknowledged it as a significant “honour” to wear the number previously retired in tribute to the legendary Diego Maradona, but emphasized, “I am my own player.”
De Bruyne has been training with Napoli for approximately a week, having joined the club at the Stadio Maradona on a free transfer. This move marks the end of his decade-long tenure at Manchester City, where he accumulated an impressive trophy haul including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups, and the UEFA Champions League.
The Belgian midfielder`s official unveiling to the press took place on Saturday, followed by his introductory press conference that afternoon.
De Bruyne`s Perspective on Wearing Maradona`s No. 10 Shirt

During his inaugural press conference with Napoli, journalists inquired about recently circulated images depicting the former Manchester City player wearing Maradona`s retired No. 10 shirt during training sessions.
“Initially, I was somewhat surprised because I was aware the number had been retired,” De Bruyne stated. “However, it`s also a great honor. It`s an honor from the team and the club to entrust me with this responsibility.”

He further elaborated that for a player of his caliber, a jersey number doesn`t create additional pressure, as “the pressure arises naturally when you play for a prominent team like Napoli.”
“I don`t believe it adds any extra pressure,” De Bruyne reiterated. “The pressure is inherent. When you represent a major club like Napoli, the pressure is always present. The team is driven to win, and as a player and part of the squad, you understand your responsibilities. However, I don`t think a specific number or anything else will intensify that pressure.”
“Maradona is simply Maradona; he`s a true football legend and inextricably linked with Napoli,” De Bruyne concluded. “I am grateful and proud, but I am my own individual player. My goal is to perform my duties to the best of my ability, and I hope to bring joy to the team, the city, and the fans through strong performances.”
