The Italian national team is looking to build on its rich history, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma expressing the squad`s eagerness to “write new pages in the history books” alongside coach Gennaro Gattuso. Gattuso, a former World Cup winner, also shared a humorous anecdote about a cherished memento from his playing days.
The “Azzurri” delegation recently visited the newly renovated Museum of Calcio exhibition at the Coverciano training camp. This visit took place in anticipation of their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Israel. Captain Donnarumma and head coach Gattuso were present at the unveiling of the updated museum space, accompanied by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina.
“We feel a significant sense of responsibility, given the immense history that precedes us,” Donnarumma told reporters. “We must commit entirely to creating new chapters in these history books, and we hope to write many of them together with the coach. This is my aspiration. This museum is truly fantastic; it gives me goosebumps.”
Italy`s Quest for More Silverware

The museum beautifully curates artifacts spanning the history of the Italian national squad, featuring memorable items from their four World Cup triumphs. These victories occurred in 1934, 1938, 1982, and most recently in 2006, an achievement Gattuso was an integral part of.

Recalling his own contribution, the former midfielder revealed to reporters that he had intended to donate a personal keepsake from the 2006 tournament held in Germany. However, he admitted, “I promised to bring my boots from 2006, but my mother has them in Calabria, and she won’t let anyone touch them!” Gattuso added, “It is deeply emotional to be here, surrounded by so many wonderful memories.”
