Gianluigi Donnarumma expressed a desire to re-contest Italy`s past defeat to Norway, yet underscored the team`s need to look forward. He confidently affirmed, “I am sure we will qualify for the World Cup.”
The Azzurri secured their play-off spot with a decisive 3-0 victory over Israel at the Stadio Friuli. Mateo Retegui scored two goals, complemented by Gianluca Mancini`s late header from a corner kick.
Despite a fumbled cross during last week`s 3-1 win against Estonia in Tallinn, Donnarumma`s stellar performance this evening, marked by two critical saves against Israeli counter-attacks, strongly reaffirmed his standing as one of the world`s elite goalkeepers.
Donnarumma`s steadfast belief in Italy`s qualification

“Errors are an inevitable part of football. Fortunately, when my mistake occurred, we were already leading 3-0,” Donnarumma remarked to Sky Sport Italia.
He continued, “I successfully put it behind me swiftly, thanks to the invaluable support of my teammates and the coach. My complete focus was on this match, and I`m very pleased with the team`s collective effort. Every game is challenging now, demanding that we fight hard for every point, and Israel certainly created problems for us. Our strong determination to keep a clean sheet was achieved, which is gratifying.”
Donnarumma further stated, “I observed a strong team, demonstrating genuine resolve, even from those who came off the bench. I am very impressed with the coach`s work; his ability to connect with every player, whether they are in the starting XI or not, is fundamentally important.”

Under Coach Gattuso, the Nazionale has maintained a flawless record of four wins, scoring 16 goals while conceding five. Notably, four of those conceded goals came in last month`s unusual 5-4 victory over Israel.
Donnarumma lauded Gattuso, explaining, “He possesses an incredible character, effectively conveying his hunger, determination, and unique vision of football. He fosters a strong relationship with all of us, advocating for an attacking and controlling style of play. We have only recently begun working with him, so there is significant room for continuous improvement.”
“We are fully prepared for the upcoming November fixtures and subsequently for the play-offs.”

Italy had initially aimed for direct qualification to the 2026 World Cup, but their campaign started poorly with a 3-0 defeat in Norway under former coach Luciano Spalletti. The players who participated in that match would undoubtedly wish for an opportunity to replay it.
Donnarumma candidly admitted, “I discussed with the team earlier that we cannot afford any more missteps now, otherwise we will find ourselves directly in the play-offs. Naturally, I would love to play that game again; we were completely disorganized, almost like a different team back then.”
“However, we must now concentrate on what lies ahead, as we have a significant opportunity. I am confident that this is a strong team, and I am certain we will secure our place in the World Cup.”
Even if Italy defeats Norway next month and finishes level on points, their goal difference deficit is currently too immense to overcome. The draw for the play-offs is scheduled for November 21, with the initial match set for March 2026.
