Eric Roy Expresses Shock Over Brest’s Austere Transfer Window and Budget Realities

Football & Cricket

Stade Brestois manager Eric Roy had anticipated a lack of significant investment in new players even at the end of last season, based on the club`s financial state. Time has proven him right.

The club`s UEFA Champions League journey last season didn`t serve as a springboard to compete with French football`s elite; instead, it merely ensured their survival. Roy admitted that without this Champions League participation, the club might have ceased to exist, expressing concern that Brest would be forced to fight for survival this season.

The transfer window proved difficult for Brest, as their squad significantly weakened. Last season, to contend on two fronts, the club heavily relied on loaned players, most of whom have now departed. Ludovic Ajorque is a notable player who remained. Numerous footballers, including Abdallah Sima, Romain Faivre, Soumaila Coulibaly, Edimilson Fernandes, and Ibrahim Salah, left upon the expiration of their loans. Additionally, Mehdi Camara, Karamoko Dembélé, Mathias Pereira Lage, Massadio Haidara, Marco Bizot, Jordan Amavi, and Jonas Martin have all left the club. According to Ouest-France, Pierre Lees-Melou might also be on his way out, currently in talks with Paris FC.

Regarding new acquisitions, there were only a few: Ludovic Ajorque, whose loan move was made permanent for €2 million; Joris Chotard, who arrived over the weekend for under €3 million; Radoslaw Majecki, who joined from AS Monaco on a direct loan deal; and Junio Diaz, loaned from Ligue 2 club Troyes.

This difficult situation deeply frustrates Roy. He expressed shock that Brest has the second-smallest budget in Ligue 1, even less than Metz, who just ascended from Ligue 2, despite Brest`s recent Champions League appearance. Roy acknowledged that this, unfortunately, reflects the club`s current state, as he stated after Sunday`s 0-2 loss to Toulouse FC.
