Erling Haaland Donates Rare £100,000 Viking Book to Home Town

Football & Cricket

Erling Haaland, renowned for his inspirational football career, is now extending his influence by connecting Norwegians with their rich history, specifically the heritage of the Vikings.

The prolific Manchester City striker, who holds the record as Norway’s all-time leading scorer with an impressive 55 goals in 48 international appearances, has made a significant cultural contribution. He has donated a rare 16th-century edition of Viking sagas to the library in Bryne, the town where he grew up in Norway.

While Haaland was born in Leeds, England, during his father Alf-Inge’s time playing for Leeds United, he spent his formative years in Bryne.

In December, the 25-year-old footballer and his father jointly acquired the historical volume for 1.3 million Norwegian crowns (approximately £100,000), setting a new record for a book sale in Norway.

This exceptional item is a 1594 printed edition of a monumental work by the 13th-century Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson. It vividly recounts medieval tales featuring Viking kings, queens, farmers, and formidable warriors.

Haaland has entrusted this sole surviving copy to the Bryne library, ensuring it will be proudly displayed and made accessible for the public to enjoy.

Bryne is located in western Norway, roughly 30km south of Stavanger, and forms part of the Time municipality within the Jæren district.

Speaking to Norwegian media, Haaland shared his vision: “I want the book always to be open so that people can delve into the stories of those who originated from my home, from Bryne and Jæren.”

Reflecting on his own journey, he added, “I’ve been fortunate to live out my dream through football, a chance I know not everyone receives.”

“Books,” he emphasized, “offer countless individuals the opportunity to dream expansively, discover new horizons, and forge their own unique paths.”

Beyond this generous cultural act, Haaland continues to demonstrate his prowess on the field. He currently leads the Premier League scoring charts this season with 22 goals in 29 appearances. Last year, he was also the top scorer in the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, netting 16 goals and playing a key role in Norway securing a spot in the finals for the first time since 1998.
