Matt O`Riley, aged 24, made his full debut for Olympique de Marseille on football`s grandest stage – the Santiago Bernabéu. However, his very presence in Provence stemmed largely from an unexpected fallout in England. According to a report from La Provence, a dramatic clash with Brighton`s head coach, Fabian Hürzeler, following the third Premier League matchday, significantly altered O`Riley`s career trajectory.
Just weeks earlier, Brighton had firmly rejected any advances from OM. Medhi Benatia, Marseille’s sporting director, had initiated contact with O’Riley’s agent – his father, Dominic – earlier in the summer. Brighton, having invested a substantial €30 million to acquire O`Riley from Celtic in 2024, had no intention of either selling or loaning him out.
Nevertheless, Rabiot’s late departure to AC Milan compelled Marseille to re-enter the transfer market. When relations between O’Riley and Hürzeler soured, the opportunity for a deal suddenly reappeared. With the transfer window rapidly closing, the agreement was swiftly finalised in under 24 hours. The deal was structured as a loan without an option to buy, as Brighton was determined to protect their significant investment in the player.
O’Riley was immediately thrust into the starting XI for the match against Real Madrid, where his refined technique was evident. Despite this, the Danish midfielder faced criticism for reportedly slowing down OM’s counter-attacks. Roberto De Zerbi admitted afterwards that he regretted not introducing Angel Gomes, who had excelled in the previous match against Lorient, to inject more creativity into the side.
Despite the initial scrutiny, Marseille views O’Riley as a versatile box-to-box midfielder, drawing parallels to Rabiot, rather than a classic No. 10 playmaker. For O’Riley, the upcoming Clasico against PSG this weekend offers an ideal opportunity to win over a skeptical fanbase – and demonstrate that his challenging Bernabéu baptism was merely the initial step in his journey.
