Finn Allen on His Approach to Facing Jasprit Bumrah in T20 World Cup 2026 Final

Cricket News

New Zealand opener Finn Allen has disclosed his strategy for confronting India’s star bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, in the T20 World Cup final scheduled for Sunday, March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Bumrah has been a pivotal player for India throughout the tournament, securing 10 wickets in seven innings with an average of 15.90. His impressive economy rate of 6.62 highlights the difficulty batters have faced scoring against him.

In the second semifinal on Thursday, March 5, at Wankhede, Bumrah’s spell of 1 for 33 was crucial. It enabled India to successfully defend a formidable target of 254 runs, securing a narrow seven-run victory, even with Jacob Bethell’s outstanding century. His exceptional bowling, conceding only 14 runs in his final two overs, ultimately decided the match.

Regarding his preparation for facing the Indian pacer, Allen stated he favors a relaxed approach over meticulously analyzing Bumrah’s footage to decipher his game plan.

“We just had a very relaxed scouting meeting with Ronc (Luke Ronchi). Timmy (Seifert) and I grab coffee, and we simply discuss their tactics. I generally don’t watch extensive footage unless it’s a new bowler, but Bumrah is so prominent, you see him everywhere.”

Allen emphasized his belief in not being overwhelmed by the magnitude of the event, focusing instead on “playing the ball, not the man.”

“Honestly, the key is to stay relaxed. I strongly believe in playing the ball, not the bowler. Getting too fixated on Jasprit Bumrah or the atmosphere, especially with 130,000 Indian fans, can distract you. It’s simply about focusing on the delivery.”

Allen enters the final in exceptional form, having scored the fastest century in tournament history – a 33-ball hundred against South Africa in Wednesday’s first semifinal. He also holds the record for the most sixes by a single batter in a T20 World Cup, with 20 maximums. His tournament statistics stand at 289 runs at an average of 57.80, boasting an impressive strike rate of 203.52.
