A former Real Madrid forward emerged as the standout performer, marking the beginning of the new La Liga campaign on Saturday night with a memorable display.

Deportivo Alavés hosted Getafe, officially kicking off the 2026/27 season in Spain's top football division.

Ultimately, the home side secured a dominant 3-0 victory, significantly benefiting from Kiko Femenía's red card late in the first half.

The aforementioned Mariano Díaz was directly involved in all three of Alavés' goals.

Brought on as a substitute early in the second half, Mariano quickly made his impact. After providing the assist for Alavés' opening goal, the 33-year-old striker found the net himself late in the game, and then registered another assist deep into stoppage time.

As confirmed by statisticians Opta, Mariano Díaz has set a new personal best in his career:

“Mariano Díaz has been involved in three goals in a single La Liga match (one goal, two assists) for the first time in his career (80 appearances).”
