Ederson's Atletico Madrid Move Verbally Agreed, Arsenal Miss Out on Transfer Target
Arsenal's reported pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson appears to have reached an end, as the player has verbally agreed to join Atletico Madrid, according to recent reports.
The talented Brazilian midfielder has impressed in Serie A, previously generating transfer rumors linking him with Arsenal. Initial reports, including one from the print edition of Marca (cited and translated by Sport Witness), suggested Arsenal was keen on Ederson, with Atletico also vying for his signature. However, it now seems Atletico Madrid has taken the lead in the race for the 26-year-old.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that Atletico Madrid has "verbally agreed on personal terms with Éderson as Atalanta midfielder is a top target." Romano's update indicates that while personal terms are settled, an agreement between the two clubs is still pending, with discussions revolving around a fee of approximately €35-40 million. Ederson is currently under contract with Atalanta until June 2027.
This potential transfer highlights a continued relationship between the clubs, as Atletico previously secured Ademola Lookman on loan from Atalanta in January.
Was Ederson Essential for Arsenal?
While Ederson is undoubtedly a quality player, there is a strong argument that Arsenal may have more critical areas to address than central midfield. With established and world-class midfielders like Declan Rice and potentially Martin Zubimendi already in their ranks, Ederson's potential playing time at the Emirates Stadium might have been limited.
It is suggested that the Gunners' transfer strategy could be better served by focusing on acquiring a new striker, a dedicated winger, or a versatile attacking player capable of fulfilling both roles.
