Gian Piero Gasperini articulated his insistence on tactical `variety` from his Roma attackers following their 1-0 triumph over Pisa, a result that maintained their perfect record. He firmly believes that players should not be confined to their preferred roles or “comfort zones.”
The Giallorossi have demonstrated an uncharacteristically robust defensive performance early in the season, securing their second consecutive 1-0 victory, having previously defeated Bologna by the identical scoreline just last week.
The decisive goal came in the second half courtesy of Matias Soulé, a play initiated by the substitute Paulo Dybala, whose introduction immediately brought a surge of quality to the team, despite him still recovering from surgery.
“Overall, the team`s display was very commendable,” Gasperini remarked to Sky Sport Italia. “We faced initial challenges as Pisa was well-organized and physically imposing, always posing a threat with aerial balls. However, we gradually gained control and performed exceptionally well in the second half. I genuinely feel we could have extended our lead with more goals.”
He added, “The goal was a superb team effort, involving all three of our forwards. If we can consistently play with such fluidity, we`ll effectively break down teams accustomed to deep defending.”
Manu Koné was deployed in an unexpectedly wide and advanced attacking position, showcasing his adaptability, including a late surge that set up Artem Dovbyk.
“Koné possesses the versatility to operate both wide and as a central midfielder,” Gasperini explained. “Given that Bryan Cristante maintained a very central role today, we required others to adjust their positioning. When Koné accelerates, he becomes incredibly difficult to stop, finding considerable space in those wider areas. He`s also a highly effective dribbler.”
Gasperini`s Evolving Tactical Vision for Roma`s Forwards

Stephan El Shaarawy was replaced by Dybala at halftime, a substitution that seemed to inject new life and dynamism into Roma`s attack.
Gasperini clarified, “Dybala began on the left, behind Soulé, who was performing admirably on the right, and I preferred not to shift him from that position.”
“Paulo is capable of playing across any attacking role – on the left, as a Number 10, or even as a centre-forward. While he naturally prefers to cut inside and shoot with his left foot, I firmly believe that a player should not be confined to their comfort zone. He should be able to operate effectively in any forward area and understand his responsibilities.”
“I expect the same versatility from Soulé; they shouldn`t rely solely on their dominant foot but embrace a broad range of options.”

Despite initial warnings that Roma would need patience to adapt to Gasperini`s new strategic approach, the team currently sits at the top of the Serie A table, boasting a flawless record.
“The most remarkable aspect of this squad, which I inherited from Claudio Ranieri – who had an outstanding second half of the season, albeit with a different system and tactical philosophy – is their immediate receptiveness and willingness to follow my instructions from day one,” Gasperini concluded. “This might stem from their narrow miss in Champions League qualification, fueling their determination to achieve even greater success.”
“When you have such professionalism, focus, and determination among the players, you are inherently set up for a strong beginning.”
