AS Roma suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Lille at the iconic Olimpico stadium during their Europa League clash. Arnar Haraldsson`s early goal proved to be the decisive factor, securing a vital victory for the French side.
The match will undoubtedly be remembered for an astonishing and unfortunate sequence: Roma’s triple penalty miss. In quick succession, both Dovbyk and Soulé stepped up to the spot, only to have their attempts, including retaken spot-kicks, bravely denied by Lille`s goalkeeper Ozer. This left the home crowd and the team in a state of disbelief.
In a post-match interview with Sky Sport, reported by TuttoMercatoWeb, coach Gian Piero Gasperini openly acknowledged the significant impact these squandered opportunities had on the game`s outcome.

Gasperini expressed his astonishment, stating, “I`ve genuinely never witnessed three penalties missed in the same situation like that before. Falling behind early certainly played into their hands. Despite certain technical inaccuracies, Roma displayed immense desire and maintained their rhythm until the very end. While perhaps we weren`t clinical enough in converting our chances, you invariably emerge from these challenging matches having learned something valuable.”
Reflecting further on the bizarre penalty incident, he described it as “almost unique and entirely accidental,” adding that it “undoubtedly compromised the final result. Nevertheless, the team showcased an admirable fighting spirit.”
Gasperini Highlights Positives Amidst Lille Defeat
Shifting his focus to the team`s commendable aspects, Gasperini observed, “In the second half, we managed to sustain our attacking pressure. Lille is undeniably a fast and technically proficient team, making our task far from easy, but our squad demonstrated commendable spirit and intensity. Of course, we must strive to minimize mistakes, yet I also have to acknowledge the good things. This is a competition structured over eight games, not a sudden knockout, and the team remained fully focused until the final whistle.”

When questioned about any potential psychological repercussions from the defeat, he responded firmly, “We are sportsmen. Mistakes are an inherent part of the game, but there is simply no place for discouragement. Fortunately, we have another match in three days, which allows us to quickly put this behind us and move forward.”
Regarding player injuries, Gasperini concluded, “We`ll have a clearer picture tomorrow. Massara might possess more detailed information, but I don`t anticipate Dybala`s recovery in time for the next game yet.”
