Gian Piero Gasperini expressed satisfaction with AS Roma`s 1-0 opening victory over Bologna, viewing it as a positive sign for the future, particularly noting the team`s demonstrated `character to fight.`
This match marked Gasperini’s competitive debut as the new coach for the Giallorossi. While he didn`t drastically alter the squad, new signings Wesley Franca and Evan Ferguson were included in the starting eleven. It was Franca, the wing-back, who netted the decisive goal from a challenging angle, securing the 1-0 win against Bologna.
Gasperini Pleased with Roma`s Initial Performance

“I commend the players; the first match is always difficult, especially when the movements and positions aren`t fully established. However, we started strongly against a formidable opponent like Bologna, which is incredibly encouraging,” Gasperini stated in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.
He added, “We have very young players with significant potential for growth, and they showcased their abilities tonight. The squad also displayed solidity during pre-season. I observed many positive aspects this evening, and the fans` appreciation was wonderful for us.”
This match was also Gian Piero Gasperini’s 600th Serie A fixture as a coach, marking a remarkable beginning to his Roma journey following nine successful years with Atalanta.

“We maintained a compact formation and held our shape effectively. The strikers were excellent in their defensive contributions, and we played aggressively and precisely. I noted good quality, especially in the first half-hour, where we probably deserved to be ahead. Bologna then pushed back, but our defense remained consistently strong,” the coach continued.
“If we had been a bit sharper, we might have scored a second goal, leading to a calmer finish. Nevertheless, battling until the end is positive, as it demonstrates that this team possesses the character to fight.”
Manu Koné, who had reportedly attracted interest from Inter this summer, remained with Roma, supposedly at Gasperini’s insistence to keep the midfielder.
“We played with courage, which wasn`t easy given Bologna`s attacking prowess. We understand that any mistake can be punished at any moment, but we played consistently, frequently won back possession, and established midfield supremacy,” concluded Gasperini.
“I am content with this being the first match; the opening weekend is challenging for any team. Playing with this spirit, in front of these fans, against a strong opponent, gives us great confidence moving forward.”
