The first World Cup final match between England and West Indies was played on June 23, 1979, at Lord’s. England elected to field first after winning the toss. West Indies bounced back from a slow start to reach 286 with a century from Vivian Richard. The English openers got off to a cautious start but only scored gradually. 

The English batting disintegrated after Graham Gooch was dismissed, and the other eight wickets went for just 11 runs, the most disastrous collapse in World Cup history, giving West Indies their second championship.

After winning the toss, England chose to take the pitch first. Nicolas Pooran led his team to 212 runs with a 63-run performance off of 78 balls. With Joe Root’s goal, England was able to comfortably reach the goal.
