On June 11 at Birmingham, these teams played in their first-ever World Cup game. After losing the toss, New Zealand chose to bat first. The Kiwis scored 238 points. Pakistan missed the mark by 53 runs. The Black Caps’ victory over Pakistan in this World Cup was ultimately their only one until the 2011 edition. Nine days after their first World Cup meeting in Nottingham, they had their second one.

Pakistan chose to bat first after winning the toss this time. Zaheer Abbas century increased their total to 261 runs. The Kiwi batters managed to hit 250 runs in response before being bowled out.

Nine years later, at the 1992 Cricket World Cup, these teams faced off again. Pakistan triumphed in both games this time. Pakistan chose to field after winning the toss in the opening game. They were able to hold the New Zealand batsmen to a meagre 166 runs thanks to Wasim Akram’s four wickets. Rameez Raja’s score of 119, which was undefeated, helped Pakistan comfortably reach the goal. 

The World Cup Semi-Final was their second competition match. New Zealand set Pakistan a target of 263 runs after winning the toss and electing to bat first. The subsequent run chase was tense and competitive, with Pakistan emerging as the superior team.

The following World Cup match between Pakistan and New Zealand was played on March 6th, 1996 at Lahore. The Kiwis requested the hosts to bat first after winning the toss. 

Saeed Anwar and Saleem Malik each scored half-centuries to help Pakistan reach 281 runs after 50 overs. New Zealand’s batsmen continued to visit the pavilion as they chased 282 runs, and by the 48th over, when they had amassed 235 runs, the entire squad had returned to the dressing room.

Three years later, both the teams again met each other twice in the 1999 Cricket World Cup. The first match was in the league stage, where Pakistan batted first and scored 269 runs, after losing the toss. 

The Kiwi batsmen failed to chase the target and were only able to score 207 runs at the end of 50 overs. The second meeting was in the semi-final of the tournament, where again the Pakistani players got better of their counterparts. New Zealand gave a target of 242 runs to Pakistan after batting first. Pakistan cruised to the win with only losing one wicket.

They finally crossed paths during the 2011 ICC World Cup in Pallekele, 12 years later. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, New Zealand scored 302 runs, with Ross Taylor leading the way with an undefeated 131. In response, Pakistan’s entire starting lineup returned to the locker room for 192 runs.

Their most recent encounter took place at the 2019 ICC World Cup, which Pakistan easily won by 6 wickets. Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi’s outstanding performances helped Pakistan keep its World Cup chances alive.
