Inter Miami Star Sergio Busquets Confirms Retirement

Football & Cricket

Inter Miami faces the end of an era as midfielder Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from professional football at the conclusion of the current season. The news came via an Instagram video. While Miami still has five regular-season matches remaining and has already secured a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs, Busquets` announcement adds a significant layer of meaning to the remainder of his final campaign.

Sergio Busquets` career has been marked by unparalleled success across Barcelona, the Spanish national team, and more recently, Inter Miami. At Barcelona, only Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez surpassed his number of appearances. His extensive trophy cabinet boasts titles including La Liga, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de España, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Supporters` Shield, Leagues Cup, the European Championship, and the FIFA World Cup. Busquets has truly won nearly every major honor in football and remains in contention for two additional club trophies in MLS this season.

“I feel that the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional soccer player. It has been almost 20 years enjoying this incredible story that I have always dreamed of,” Busquets stated in his emotional announcement. He concluded by expressing gratitude: “A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”

Since his arrival at Inter Miami in 2023 alongside Lionel Messi, Busquets has been instrumental in elevating the club`s performance. As he prepares for his exit, he will entrust the midfield`s leadership to Rodrigo De Paul. The Argentine joined Inter Miami this summer on loan from Atletico Madrid, with an option to make the move permanent. The club plans to utilize a freed-up Designated Player slot in the offseason to activate this option, ensuring roster flexibility.

However, Busquets` immediate mission is far from over. A pivotal figure in Spain`s 2010 World Cup victory, the 37-year-old continues to be a formidable defensive presence for the Herons. His exceptional vision and ability to break through opposition lines to create chances for Messi and other attackers remain vital. Inter Miami`s next challenge is an away match against Toronto FC on Saturday.
