Piero Ausilio, Inter Milan`s sporting director, has refuted claims that Barcelona had made an offer for Denzel Dumfries. He clarified that the player`s release clause was established during a challenging period for the club.
Speaking at a gala dinner, Ausilio provided extensive comments to various media outlets regarding the club`s present circumstances. Ausilio addressed numerous topics during his interview, including the persistent rumors surrounding Dumfries.
Specifically, Ausilio was questioned about Spanish media reports suggesting Barcelona`s keen interest in signing the Dutch international.
Dumfries` Release Clause at Inter

Ausilio asserted, “No, we received absolutely nothing from them; there has never been any substance to these claims.” He confirmed the existence of a release clause, explaining it was a measure taken “during a difficult moment” to safeguard the club`s assets. He added, “We renewed his contract when there was a genuine risk of losing him as a free agent. I can assure you that the clause worried you much more than it worried us. Inter is calm, and he is content to stay.”
The release clause, surprisingly set at €20 million and potentially rising to €30 million, is considered a remarkably low figure for a player of Dumfries` calibre.
His new contract, signed in November 2024, extends until June 2028. This deal ensures the retention of the Dutch international, who initially arrived from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021 for €14.25 million.
Dumfries enjoyed an exceptional season, tallying 11 goals and six assists across 47 competitive appearances in Serie A, the Champions League, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
