Italian football icon Fabio Cannavaro, a celebrated defender and World Cup winner, has reportedly reached an agreement to become the new head coach of the Uzbekistan National Team. This significant appointment comes as Uzbekistan prepares for its inaugural appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
According to reports from reputable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Cannavaro has verbally committed to the Asian nation. The formal documentation for this agreement is expected to be finalized and signed within the next two days.

Cannavaro’s most recent coaching role was with Croatian side GNK Dinamo, from which he was dismissed after securing only seven victories in his initial fourteen matches.
Cannavaro to Spearhead Uzbekistan`s World Cup Ambitions
Uzbekistan demonstrated a remarkable performance during their Asian World Cup qualifying campaign, successfully securing second place in Group A.
Their qualification saw them finish a mere two points behind group leaders Iran and maintain a comfortable six-point lead over the third-placed UAE. Notably, Uzbekistan showcased a strong defense, conceding just seven goals throughout their campaign, which was the joint-second lowest tally in the entire competition.

Having rightfully earned their spot in the upcoming 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Uzbekistan is now poised to enter the global stage under the guidance of a former World Cup winner, adding a layer of experience and prestige to their historic debut.
