In a significant collective agreement, Serie A footballers, through a deal facilitated by their Players` Association, have consented to an automatic 25% reduction in their wages should their club be relegated to Serie B. This measure is primarily aimed at easing the substantial financial burden clubs often face when transitioning from the top tier to the second division.
Ezio Simonelli, President of Lega Serie A, lauded this accord as historic. He underscored its importance in fostering a “more robust, equitable, and sustainable football system” for the benefit of all stakeholders.
Players Show Commitment to Club Financial Health
Under the new terms, a player`s salary will automatically decrease by a quarter if their team drops from Serie A to Serie B. Beyond these direct wage adjustments, additional support for clubs includes “parachute payments” from the remaining Serie A teams to those newly relegated. These payments are crucial, as a significant portion of Serie A`s revenue is generated from television pay-per-view rights, which diminish greatly upon relegation. The parachute payments, ranging from €10 million to €25 million, are determined by the length of time the club spent in the top division before relegation.
