Following a distinguished decade-long career in the Premier League with Manchester City, Kevin De Bruyne has openly discussed his motivations for making a free transfer move to Napoli. The Belgian maestro highlighted that the Italian club offered an optimal “all-encompassing” package, blending the allure of competitive football with a desirable new “lifestyle” for his family.
De Bruyne addressed journalists at his inaugural press conference on Saturday, having finalized his transfer to the Partenopei in June and recently completed his first week of pre-season training. Among the various topics discussed, particular attention was given to his honor of receiving Napoli’s famed number 10 jersey, a shirt previously retired in homage to the legendary Diego Maradona, as well as the rationale behind his choice to join the club.
Why Napoli Prevailed Over Other Offers for De Bruyne
It is understood that De Bruyne considered several other prospective opportunities before committing to Napoli. These included options across Europe, lucrative proposals from Saudi Arabia, and enticing prospects in the United States. Nevertheless, the midfielder ultimately decided to relocate to Campania, a region where he and his wife celebrated their marriage several years prior.
“From a competitive standpoint, it’s a very attractive place to be,” De Bruyne affirmed when asked about his decision. “They were champions last year, which clearly demonstrated their significant quality.”
He continued, “Undoubtedly, it’s a stark contrast to my experiences in England, but that’s precisely what makes it so thrilling. I felt I still had the drive and the inherent quality to perform at this high level. Napoli proved to be an excellent choice. Additionally, the climate here is considerably different from what I’m accustomed to in England.”
“My primary objective was to continue playing at the pinnacle of the sport. When the sporting director visited England and presented their vision and the surrounding project, it truly ignited my excitement. We evaluated every aspect, and I concluded that this was the ideal environment for me.”
De Bruyne then reflected on his considerable achievements in the Premier League, which include securing six titles. While he anticipates a warm reception at the Etihad Stadium in the future, he clarified that Napoli presented a fresh chapter in life and an ambitious project bolstered by significant investment.
“I spent a substantial period in the Premier League, and in the end, I made the decision to move outside England. I’ve accomplished what I set out to do, and I’ll always remain a Manchester City player at heart. The manner in which my time there concluded signaled it was time to embrace a new challenge.”

“When I was presented with the complete project, combined with the opportunity to play in Italy at such a high level, it was incredibly motivating. The club’s proposed plan showed a strong commitment to investment and continuous progress. They are already champions, yet they are still enhancing their squad. You can see they’ve already brought in four or five new players, clearly building for the future.”

“Naturally, I’m no longer the youngest player, but I firmly believe I still have a great deal to contribute. I hope I can assist the team in their development, and conversely, I also expect to learn from them: a new playing philosophy, a new style, a new league.”

“This marks the first instance I’ve found myself in a free agent situation. I’ve always been under contract, so the summers were typically very straightforward. The longer the season progressed without a contract agreement, it became somewhat stressful, as it was a completely novel experience for me.”

“Then, of course, Napoli presented itself, along with other clubs, each outlining their unique projects. There were substantial differences concerning projects, lifestyle, and competitive levels. I would assert that Napoli’s proposal was, for me, the most comprehensive and optimal choice. The primary determinant was the competitive aspect, but also the lifestyle and the abundant sunshine, which are quite distinct from what I’m accustomed to. However, I am a professional footballer, highly competitive, and I truly believe I can still perform at an elite level.”
“As long as I am playing football, I intend to extract the absolute maximum from my abilities. The day arrives when I feel I can no longer achieve that, perhaps I will then make a different decision. But for now, at 34 years old, I still feel capable of performing at a high standard, and I am here to demonstrate precisely that.”
