Lille OSC kicked off their season with a crucial victory, securing a 1-0 win over AS Monaco thanks to a dramatic last-minute goal from veteran striker Olivier Giroud.
Match Report
Monaco started brightly, frequently threatening with crosses into the box. Caio Henrique delivered a promising ball to the far post for Maghnes Akliouche, whose shot, however, bounced off the ground directly into the safe hands of goalkeeper Berke Özer. Akliouche later had an opportunity to create a chance for Folarin Balogun, but once again, Monaco`s final touch lacked precision.
Monaco nearly capitalized on poor defensive organization from Lille. Folarin Balogun drifted wide right, drawing Alexsandro and Nathan Ngoy out of position and creating a vast space in the center. Aleksandr Golovin exploited this, playing Akliouche through, who surged forward and shot. Yet again, Özer was on hand to make the save. Takumi Minamino collected the rebound but was pushed wide, and his subsequent cross failed to connect with Balogun.
Nathan Ngoy attempted to atone for his earlier errors with a long ball over the Monaco defense, finding Hákon Arnar Haraldsson. Lille`s number 10 controlled it but then produced a disappointing shot that sailed wide. The hosts enjoyed a short period of pressure, but Monaco ultimately concluded the first half as the dominant team, as Lille`s persistent errors in their build-up play allowed their opponents into dangerous areas.
The second half began with a contentious atmosphere and a disrupted flow, largely due to Lille players frequently going down under Monaco`s physical challenges. Ngal’ayel Mukau suffered an injury from a tackle by Henrique and required a stretcher to leave the field.
Ayyoub Bouaddi unleashed a powerful long-range shot, which Christian Mawissa expertly deflected wide with a quick reflex. This moment ignited the home crowd, and their energy seemed to transfer to the pitch as Lille gradually asserted themselves. Olivier Giroud`s anticipation was clear when Félix Correia delivered a cross into the six-yard box. The striker`s timing was impeccable, arriving late and executing a falling volley, only for the effort to narrowly miss the target.
Lille maintained their pressure, and in injury time, both Bouaddi and Haraldsson had chances, but neither could convert. Ultimately, it was Giroud who broke the deadlock. In the 91st minute, substitute Mathis Fernandez-Pardo found the veteran striker in the box. The 2018 World Cup winner deftly controlled the ball, turned, and then clinically finished, securing the win with Lille`s sole shot on target of the entire match.
Lille had another opportunity when Fernandez-Pardo was fouled in the box by Mawissa, leading to a penalty. However, Giroud, usually so composed, uncharacteristically blasted his spot-kick over the crossbar. In the dying seconds, Mika Biereth had Monaco`s final chance to salvage a point, but he too failed to convert.
