According to reports from CBS Sports sources, Liverpool has reached an agreement for the transfer of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, with an initial fee set at $135 million. This potential signing has the capacity to surpass the existing British transfer record, currently held by Chelsea following their acquisition of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for just under $145 million.
The final cost associated with Wirtz`s move is contingent on various add-on clauses, making its ultimate value currently uncertain. Information from sources in Germany suggests the total fee could approach the full $170 million figure that Leverkusen initially sought for their standout player. Conversely, some estimates place Liverpool`s maximum potential outlay at around $157 million.
With the clubs having agreed terms, Wirtz is now free to finalize his personal agreement with Liverpool. This stage is not anticipated to pose significant difficulties, particularly as rival interested parties, including Bayern Munich and Manchester City, reportedly withdrew from the pursuit once it became evident that the 22-year-old favored a switch to the English club. Wirtz is currently understood to be on vacation. Upon his return, he will need to successfully complete a medical examination before officially making the move to Anfield.
Regardless of the precise final amount, this transfer will mark the most expensive player signing in Liverpool`s history, exceeding the investment of up to $115 million they committed to Benfica for Darwin Nunez. It also represents a record-breaking sale for Leverkusen, whose previous highest fee received was $115 million from Chelsea for Kai Havertz.
Wirtz took on the mantle of Leverkusen`s primary creative force after Kai Havertz`s departure in 2020. The gifted player, who emerged from Cologne`s academy, rapidly established himself as one of Europe`s leading playmakers. He departs the Bay Arena with an impressive record of 59 goals and 63 assists across 201 appearances. Wirtz was a central figure in Leverkusen`s remarkable 2023-24 campaign, which saw them clinch both the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal, completing an undefeated domestic season.
Wirtz`s anticipated arrival follows that of his former Bayer Leverkusen teammate, Jeremie Frimpong, indicating Liverpool`s intention to invest significantly after winning the Premier League title last season. Under Xabi Alonso`s management at Leverkusen, Wirtz was typically deployed as the left-sided attacking midfielder in a pairing. His adaptability is expected to be highly valued by manager Arne Slot, who could utilize him centrally, on the left wing, or potentially even in a more forward role.
