Matchday 2 Ligue 1 McDonald’s, August 23, 2025

Olympique Lyonnais secured their second consecutive victory with a commanding performance against recently promoted Metz, clinching a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Malick Fofana, Corentin Tolisso, and Adam Karabec.

The Match Overview

Georges Mikautadze nearly put Lyon ahead early against his former club. Following intricate link-up play involving Tolisso and Fofana, the Georgian forward found himself open at the back of Metz`s defense. However, leaning back, his shot was directed too close to Fischer, missing the opportunity to break the deadlock. Metz then began to show signs of threat. Kouao executed a brilliant run to the byline, delivering a cross for Madjo in the box, but the teenager’s flick-on failed to find the target.

Despite creating a few chances in the initial twenty minutes, it was Lyon who ultimately opened the scoring. On his full debut, Šulc displayed excellent skill to evade his marker before setting up Fofana. With remarkable balance, Fofana skillfully shifted inside, creating space, and then fired past Fischer to give OL the lead.

The visitors` promising start was quickly overshadowed as Les Gones soon doubled their advantage. Morton expertly split the Metz defense with a precise pass, finding Maitland-Niles in ample space. The English full-back then delivered a square ball to Tolisso, who confidently slotted it home, extending their lead to two goals by halftime.

The game experienced a brief interruption in the 55th minute due to an incident in the stands, yet this did not diminish Lyon`s pressure on Fischer`s goal. Kouao, however, continued to be a persistent threat on the right flank for Metz. The Ivorian international once again broke free behind the defense and found Madjo, but the striker was unable to convert the chance, which was subsequently snuffed out.

Šulc`s long-range effort went narrowly wide, denying the Czech international the chance to further increase Les Gones` lead. As OL continued their search for a third goal, Mikautadze was presented with his second clear opportunity of the night but couldn`t convert from the edge of the box. Fofana then delivered a superb cross, finding Mikautadze again, but his header was well saved by Fischer, adding to the Georgian`s growing frustration.

In the final ten minutes, Lyon finally found their third goal. Karabec`s flick-on was initially headed onto the crossbar by Tessmann inside the area, but the rebound fell back to the substitute, who made no mistake in applying the finishing touch. Metz pressed for a late consolation goal in stoppage time, but their efforts were ultimately thwarted, as OL concluded the night with a clean sheet and three well-deserved points.

  • Koffi Kouao – 5

It was an inconsistent night for the Ivorian right-back. He appeared to be Metz`s most dangerous player, creating several half-chances, none of which were converted. However, he struggled significantly with his defensive duties against Fofana, allowing the Belgian attacker too much freedom.

  • Giorgi Abuashvili – 5
