Lyon Explored Move for Atlético Madrid’s Thomas Lemar, Deal Unlikely

Football & Cricket

Olympique Lyonnais recently explored a potential loan deal for Atlético Madrid`s 28-year-old French international, Thomas Lemar. Lemar has significantly fallen out of favor with coach Diego Simeone and has not featured for Los Colchoneros since September 2023, primarily due to injuries and a dip in form. With his contract extending until 2027, Atlético Madrid has made the player available for transfer.

Despite Lyon`s tentative interest in bringing Lemar back to Ligue 1, the deal quickly became unfeasible. Reports indicate Lemar`s monthly salary, estimated to be well over €400,000, far exceeds what Lyon`s budget can accommodate, even for a temporary arrangement. Furthermore, Lemar himself has expressed a strong desire to remain in Spain, where several La Liga clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation with the aim of offering him more consistent playing time.

Under the leadership of new president Michele Kang, Olympique Lyonnais is required to strictly adhere to an internal salary cap. This financial discipline is a direct consequence of the club successfully retaining its Ligue 1 status after facing initial relegation to Ligue 2 by the DNCG, emphasizing the need for fiscal prudence.
