Olympique Lyon is reportedly set to compete with fellow Ligue 1 club Rennes for the signature of Brest`s 32-year-old midfielder, Pierre Lees-Melou, as reported by L`Equipe. Rennes, also known as Les Rouge et Noir, has renewed its interest in the former Norwich City FC player. Lees-Melou enjoyed an outstanding 2023-2024 season, which saw Brest qualify for their first-ever Champions League campaign. Despite being named Ligue 1 Player of the Year, Lees-Melou is still under contract with Brest until 2027.
L`Equipe further indicates that Lyon has been focused on reducing its squad size during the current summer transfer window. French international midfielder Jordan Veretout is reportedly close to a move to Qatar`s Al-Arabi, having agreed on personal terms. Additionally, Nemanja Matic could be permitted to depart, primarily due to his significant wages.
Consequently, Lyon is seeking an experienced midfielder, a role Lees-Melou perfectly suits. Les Gones may hold a crucial advantage: their qualification for the Europa League. This could appeal to Lees-Melou, who is reportedly eager to continue competing in European tournaments.
