Marseille Nears Agreement for Promising Defender Joel Ordóñez

Football & Cricket

Following a dynamic week that saw the significant arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Igor Paixão, Olympique de Marseille is continuing its proactive approach in the transfer market. Recent reports indicate that Les Olympiens are making substantial progress in discussions to acquire Joel Ordóñez, the 21-year-old Ecuadorian centre-back from Club Brugge.

According to insights from Fabrice Hawkins, a journalist for RMC Sport, the negotiations for Ordóñez are advancing positively. The young defender is currently under contract with the Belgian club until 2027 and is highly regarded as a long-term prospect. Despite his limited first-team appearances for Club Brugge, Ordóñez is considered exceptionally promising and has already showcased his talent at youth international level for Ecuador. He is seen as a potential key reinforcement for coach Roberto De Zerbi’s defensive setup.

Interestingly, Marseille`s fierce rivals, Paris Saint-Germain, had previously shown interest in Ordóñez, having shortlisted him back in May. However, it remains uncertain whether the capital club’s interest in the talented young defender still persists.

While Olympique de Marseille has already strengthened its defensive line earlier in the transfer window with additions such as Lens defender Facundo Medina and England U21 international CJ Egan-Riley, the club continues its active search. They are specifically looking to bring in at least one more central defender before the current transfer period concludes, highlighting their commitment to bolstering the squad.
