Marseille’s Difficult Pursuit of Lyon’s Malick Fofana

Football & Cricket

Olympique Marseille is prioritizing the acquisition of a new winger this summer, following Luis Henrique`s transfer to Inter Milan. While Igor Paixão of Feyenoord remains their top choice, Marseille is also actively exploring other options.

Among these alternatives, Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana (20) has emerged as a surprising candidate, as initially reported by Foot Mercato. However, securing his transfer presents considerable difficulties, according to La Provence.

One major hurdle is the asking price. While La Provence suggests a figure around €30 million, The Independent estimates it could be closer to €60 million, particularly given strong interest from several Premier League clubs including Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest.

The most significant challenge, however, stems from the intense rivalry between Marseille and Lyon. With AS Saint-Étienne`s relegation, Marseille stands as Lyon`s fiercest remaining top-flight competitor. Although inter-club transfers have occurred in the past (e.g., Jordan Veretout), Lyon is likely to prefer selling Fofana to one of the many other interested clubs rather than strengthening a direct rival.
