MATCH REPORT | Emegha Double Sends Strasbourg into Conference League Group Stage

Football & Cricket

RC Strasbourg Alsace successfully secured their spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage, achieving a convincing 3-1 away victory over Brøndby IF. Emmanuel Emegha emerged as the hero of the match, scoring twice, while Ismaël Doukouré added a stunning goal. Liam Rosenior’s side demonstrated resilience, withstanding Danish pressure to clinch their continental qualification.

Following a goalless first leg at home, the return match in Denmark quickly ignited. Strasbourg opened the scoring in the 15th minute: François Lemaréchal threaded a pass to Emmanuel Emegha, who, capitalizing on goalkeeper Patrick Pentz`s poor positioning, elegantly chipped the ball over him. Shortly before half-time, in the 40th minute, the Alsatians doubled their lead thanks to a powerful 30-meter strike from Ismaël Doukouré, which found the bottom corner, sending the 500 traveling supporters into delirium.

However, danger still lurked. The hosts responded immediately: in the 44th minute, veteran and former Ligue 1 midfielder Daniel Wass pounced at the far post from a flicked-on throw-in, slotting the ball into the net and restoring Brøndby`s belief before the break. For Liam Rosenior’s side, this goal cast doubt on what had been a successful first half.

The Danes started the second half aggressively, but Strasbourg maintained discipline and continued to create opportunities on the counter-attack. It was through such a move that Rosenior’s men scored the decisive third goal in the 66th minute. Valentín Barco and Diego Moreira combined in a swift counter-attack, pitting Emegha against two defenders, and he, just as in the first half, made no mistake, slotting the ball under Pentz to give Strasbourg a comfortable advantage in the final third of the game.

Joaquín Panichelli missed a chance to further extend the lead with 20 minutes remaining, a miss he likely soon regretted when, in the 85th minute, Michael Gregoritsc powerfully struck the ball into the top corner after an indirect free-kick was awarded for a foul by Barco in the box. Panichelli had another glorious opportunity in injury time to definitively seal the win, but fortunately for Strasbourg, the job was already done when referee Nenad Minakovic blew the final whistle.

This victory ensures Strasbourg`s first appearance in a UEFA competition group stage since 2019, and a new European adventure awaits the club this autumn at the Stade de la Meinau.
