Mehidy Hasan Miraz: Bangladesh Must Target Playing Full 50 Overs

Cricket News

Bangladesh`s captain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, has openly stated that his team`s One Day International (ODI) performances are in such a critical state that merely batting through all 50 overs has become their immediate priority. This stark admission follows a crushing 200-run defeat to Afghanistan, where Bangladesh were bowled out for a meager 93 runs in just 27.1 overs. This collapse mirrored an earlier incident in their UAE tour, where they were dismissed for 109 runs in 28.3 overs.

`A team suffers when the batters don’t take responsibility,` captain Mehidy said.

Both recent innings highlighted a consistent problem: Bangladesh`s top-order batsmen failed to build a strong foundation. Apart from Saif Hassan, who managed some significant hits, Rashid Khan systematically dismantled the middle order. In the latest match, 21-year-old seamer Bilal Sami also contributed significantly, achieving his first five-wicket haul.

With Bangladesh`s next ODI series against West Indies beginning this weekend, Captain Mehidy faces an urgent challenge to improve the team`s fortunes. During the post-match press conference, he emphasized, “We must aim to play the full 50 overs, as we failed to do so in the last two matches. I believe we need to acknowledge our batting unit`s poor performance.”

He further elaborated, “A team struggles profoundly when its batsmen do not shoulder their responsibility. Every batter needs to take ownership. Otherwise, our difficulties will persist. We cannot secure a victory without putting a competitive total on the scoreboard, regardless of the pitch conditions.”

Mehidy accepted personal responsibility for the series loss to Afghanistan but underscored the team`s need for a mental reset before their upcoming matches. “The team is understandably feeling down after this series defeat,” he remarked. “We are hopeful that spending two days at home with our families will allow us to return with renewed mental clarity.”

He added, “As captain, I expect the batsmen to be mentally resilient. I do not anticipate an overnight transformation. The coaching staff is actively working to boost the team`s morale, and I, too, must play my part as captain.”

Despite the comprehensive 3-0 defeat, Mehidy suggested that he does not plan significant roster changes for the West Indies series, expressing continued faith in the current group of players to rebound.

“We are failing to learn from each successive defeat,” he observed. “Our improvement is not occurring at the necessary pace. While we certainly have weaknesses in specific areas, we must move forward with our existing players. We do not have many readily available alternatives outside the current squad. We are not as poor a team as these results suggest, but we absolutely need to improve and correct our errors.”

The 3-0 ODI series loss to Afghanistan unfortunately overshadowed their earlier 3-0 T20I series victory against the same opponents. This setback also places Bangladesh`s prospects for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup in further jeopardy.

Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) released a statement prior to the third ODI, indicating that the team still has sufficient matches to climb back into the top nine of the ODI rankings and secure their spot for the ICC event, Bangladesh`s consistent batting struggles offer little encouragement.

In the first game, they managed to post 221 runs batting first, but this was followed by two disastrous batting collapses. Before the third ODI, Coach Phil Simmons had encouraged batsmen to play more positively against Afghanistan`s spinners, yet Bangladesh consistently faltered against Rashid Khan and other bowlers across all six white-ball games of the tour.

Bangladesh is scheduled to return home on Wednesday, leaving them with just two days to prepare for another three-match ODI series against West Indies. Playing in home conditions might offer some relief, but a poor crowd reception is possible, and the Dhaka pitches could still be similar to those in Abu Dhabi. It appears there is very little respite in sight for Bangladesh`s beleaguered batsmen.
