Milinkovic-Savic Couldn’t Resist Conte’s Call, Makes Napoli Scudetto Pledge

Football & Cricket

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic has revealed that initial discussions with Napoli commenced in March, emphasizing his strong desire to join the club and stating he “couldn’t say no” to coach Antonio Conte. Furthermore, the Serbian goalkeeper made a notable personal vow should Napoli achieve a Scudetto victory.

Despite receiving interest from Leeds United during the summer transfer window, the former Torino shot-stopper was steadfast in his ambition to move to Naples. The transfer arrangement is understood to be an initial €15 million loan, with a compulsory purchase clause of an additional €6 million at the close of the season. His contract is set to run until June 2030.

During his official presentation press conference, the Serbia international affirmed, “I learned of Napoli’s interest in me back in March, and from that moment, I harbored a profound wish to come here.”

His prospects for consistent playing time are not yet assured, especially considering that Alex Meret recently signed a new contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Milinkovic-Savic further explained, “When a manager of Conte’s stature calls, it’s simply not an option to decline. He instructed me to dedicate myself fully in training and to always be prepared.” Regarding his current status, he clarified, “Presently, I don’t consider myself to be either the primary or secondary goalkeeper. My sole intention in coming here is to be available to the squad; the coach will ultimately make that determination.”

The goalkeeper, recognizable by his distinctive beard, was prompted about the sacrifice he would make if Napoli were to win the Scudetto, to which he offered a singular promise. His pledge was direct: “I would be prepared to shave off my beard if we secured the league title.”

The 28-year-old, who is the younger brother of former Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, has been based in Italy since 2017. Beyond his primary tenure with Torino, he also experienced loan spells with SPAL, Ascoli, and Standard Liege. He has accumulated 146 Serie A appearances and notably garnered attention last season by saving four out of seven penalties he faced in the league.
