To commemorate Major League Soccer`s rich history, the league has unveiled the MLS Archive Collection, featuring 10 new throwback jerseys. While some designs authentically revive iconic past looks, others arguably stretch the definition of `throwback.` It`s understandable for original MLS clubs, now celebrating 30 years, or those with rebranded identities, to revisit older designs. However, for newer teams, it feels less appropriate. This issue arose last season with Inter Miami`s throwback jersey; despite its appeal, a club founded in 2020 seems too recent for such a concept. Yet, with Lionel Messi involved, expectations shift, and this season`s collection includes an even more questionable choice from a team with only three MLS seasons under its belt. Regardless, when new jerseys drop, a ranking from worst to best is always in order.
10. Charlotte FC
Charlotte FC`s jersey features an excellent crown logo, but its overall design feels cluttered and evokes a Seattle Sounders aesthetic. The concept of a `throwback` for a club that only began playing in 2022 is questionable, despite Charlotte`s broader soccer heritage. Purely from a design standpoint, there`s significant room for refinement.
9. Nashville SC
Unlike Charlotte, Nashville SC has a slightly stronger claim to a `throwback` given their USL origins. However, this particular design appears uninspired – as if they simply slapped a `groovy` pattern onto a white shirt. Despite Nashville`s usually strong color palette and good alternate kits, this effort falls short.
8. D.C. United
This D.C. United jersey, a nod to their inaugural season, is a classic but lacks flash. While appealing to fans of traditional designs, it doesn`t elevate the current perception of soccer in the District. Superior options exist higher on this list.
7. New England Revolution
The New England Revolution jersey isn`t poor, and the integration of the `crayon flag` motif across the upper half is a nice detail. However, the overall design still feels incomplete.
6. Colorado Rapids
The Colorado Rapids` otherwise plain jersey is significantly elevated by its outstanding logo. While a permanent return to this classic crest would be ideal, its inclusion in the current rotation is certainly welcome.
5. Columbus Crew
Similar to New England`s kit, the Columbus Crew jersey feels somewhat unfinished. Yet, its color scheme and design, reminiscent of a miner to complement the logo, give it an edge. Despite these strengths, there`s a clear quality gap between this and the top four kits.
4. Seattle Sounders
The Seattle Sounders` jersey, featuring the beloved orca logo, boasts delightful colors, intricate trim, and well-designed sleeves. It perfectly upholds Seattle`s consistent reputation for producing excellent kits.
3. Minnesota United
This Minnesota United kit nearly claimed the top spot. Its numbers, lettering, and gradient design are all superb. The club skillfully drew upon its history to create a jersey that will undoubtedly look fantastic on the field.
2. San Jose Earthquakes (Clash)
The `Clash` was an iconic name, and its absence from regular use is regrettable. This San Jose Earthquakes jersey, however, perfectly embodies a 1970s aesthetic. Its bold, vibrant design is sure to elicit strong opinions – you`ll either adore it or despise it. Perhaps nostalgia influenced its ranking above Minnesota, but ultimately, the decision is mine.
1. FC Dallas (Burn)
The `Burn` era of FC Dallas, another branding I wish were permanent, truly delivered with this kit. While slightly less audacious than the `Clash` jersey, its versatility allows it to shine both on and off the pitch. Plus, the logo is simply fantastic.
