Luka Modric, the seasoned midfielder, has openly shared his long-standing affinity for AC Milan and conveyed his ambitious outlook for the club. He firmly believes that merely securing a spot in the Champions League should not be the extent of their aspirations. This transition to Milan marks a pivotal new chapter for Modric, following an illustrious 13-year tenure at Real Madrid where he clinched every major honor, including the esteemed Ballon d’Or.
Approaching his 40th birthday next month, Modric sought a fresh challenge, and joining the Rossoneri represents the fulfillment of a cherished childhood dream. He recounts being particularly drawn to Milan`s style of play, largely inspired by his admiration for Croatian football legend, Zvonimir Boban.
“Growing up, I keenly followed Italian football, and Milan consistently stood out as my favorite team, especially given my idol Boban’s presence there. I’ve always held a special fondness for the Rossoneri,” Modric articulated during his inaugural press conference.
He further elaborated, “I frequently engaged in conversations about Milan with Boban whenever we met. I observed Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s journey, and Carlo Ancelotti also spoke very highly of Milan. Consequently, I always harbored a profoundly positive perception of the club and its dedicated fanbase. The warmth of the welcome I’ve received here has been truly remarkable.”
Modric has officially signed a one-year contract with Milan, which includes an option for extension until June 2027.
Modric`s Deep-Rooted Connection to AC Milan

His official unveiling was postponed as he first had to fulfill his remaining obligations with Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup, followed by a three-week vacation, before commencing pre-season training with Milan today.
“We recognize AC Milan as historically one of the foremost teams globally. It is imperative that we do not settle for a mediocre season or merely securing a Champions League berth,” Modric declared.
“This encapsulates my vision for Milan. However, we must also embrace humility and commit to rigorous effort to elevate the team back to its pinnacle. My competitive spirit is strong, and I intend to imbue this passion within the squad.”
He continued, “While Champions League qualification is a foundational objective, Milan is obligated to contend for and win trophies. This is my personal goal, and it must resonate with everyone involved with AC Milan.”
Last season, the club did manage to secure a trophy, the Supercoppa Italiana, but they suffered a defeat in the Coppa Italia Final against Bologna and failed to qualify for any UEFA competition. This absence from European football might, however, provide new coach Max Allegri with valuable time to work intensively with his players during the week, allowing them to channel all their energy into the Serie A campaign.

“I am poised to offer my extensive experience. My commitment involves diligent work, dedicating my utmost, and endeavoring to replicate the successes I achieved elsewhere,” Modric affirmed.
“I am fully aware of the considerable expectations placed upon me, and I am prepared to meet them. I eagerly anticipate commencing this new challenge. I closely follow Serie A, partly due to the significant number of Croatian players, and I’ve consistently enjoyed Italian football. It is an intensely competitive league that is steadily reclaiming its status as the world’s premier tournament.”
He noted, “Italian teams are exceptionally well-organized, a characteristic that differentiates Serie A from LaLiga. My priority is to rapidly adapt to this distinct style of football. I am particularly eager to meet Max Allegri; he is undeniably one of the world’s top coaches, a proven winner.”
The personal gesture by Milan’s sporting director, Igli Tare, who traveled to Croatia to present the club’s vision, significantly influenced Modric’s decision.
“The choice became remarkably straightforward once Tare made contact and subsequently visited Croatia. His presence underscored Milan’s genuine belief in my continued ability to perform at the highest level, and that proved to be a decisive turning point for me,” the player confessed.
“While I needed time to consult with my family, deep in my heart, I already recognized this as the optimal path forward. I felt and appreciated the immense faith they had in me.”

Despite reaching the age of 40 in September, Modric draws inspiration from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who notably played for Milan at a similar age and was instrumental in their Scudetto victory.
“I genuinely hope that a similar outcome can materialize; that would fill me with immense happiness,” he replied.
Reflecting on Milan’s performance last season, a significant highlight was their impressive Champions League triumph away against Real Madrid.
“Evidently, Milan’s previous season didn’t unfold as desired, but that period is now behind us. We must commit to strenuous effort and approach the future with unwavering confidence. If Milan can replicate the performance they delivered at the Bernabeu last season, we need to analyze why such a consistent level of play couldn’t always be maintained. It clearly indicates a high standard of quality within the squad, which we must strive to uphold consistently,” Modric elaborated.
While Ivan Rakitic lauded Milan’s good fortune in securing Modric’s services on social media, the Croatian football legend holds a more humble perspective.
“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be part of such a colossal club as Milan, and I take absolutely nothing for granted. I do not perceive myself as exceptional; I am simply a regular individual who enjoys playing football and is privileged enough to represent a grand club like Milan,” Modric concluded.
“I am absolutely thrilled to embark on this new chapter; my motivation is exceptionally high, and I sincerely hope it aligns perfectly with my expectations. It is a profound satisfaction to be in a position to assist the team, yet it’s crucial to understand that no single player, irrespective of their renown, can achieve anything in isolation. Our collective imperative is to forge a cohesive team, enabling each individual to perform at their absolute best.”
