The recent transfer window proved to be a significant challenge for the French football club, OGC Nice. Operating with a constrained budget, the club was compelled to offload players such as Evann Guessand and Marcin Bulka, subsequently seeking out more affordable replacements. In an interview with French publication L`Équipe, Nice`s sporting director, Florian Maurice, candidly described this period as “unpleasant.”
These remarks surface amidst a difficult commencement to the Ligue 1 season for “Le Gym,” who have already suffered two defeats in their opening three fixtures, losing to Toulouse FC and Le Havre AC.
However, Maurice also disclosed to L`Équipe his ambition for a more integrated collaboration between Nice and Manchester United – both prestigious clubs under the ownership of the INEOS company. It is worth noting that during the previous season, transfers between the two clubs were prohibited due to their simultaneous participation in the UEFA Europa League.
While this transfer embargo was initially set to extend until the conclusion of the summer transfer window, both Manchester United and Nice received official correspondence from UEFA at the start of the summer, confirming that the restriction had been lifted. This development made Maurice receptive to exploring collaborative opportunities. “I engaged in discussions with Manchester United during the transfer window with the aim of identifying potential solutions. We explored various scenarios, such as proposing that they sign a player and then loan him back to us, but their primary focus was on player sales,” explained Nice`s sporting director.
When questioned about drawing parallels with the multi-club model employed by BlueCo, which has facilitated numerous player movements between Chelsea and RC Strasbourg Alsace, Maurice offered a nuanced perspective: “I do not believe that is the operational model for Manchester United. We have only experienced one year where we`ve been able to maintain regular communication and exchanges with them.”
